Bible Study Sayings

10.16.13

The church we go to (Hope Fellowship) has a Bible study every Wednesday night for ladies, and I had started going to that study a year ago with one of my friends. We had met a lot of really neat ladies while we were there, and learned some great applications for the Bible in our lives (and so many of those lessons have replayed in my mind over the past week).
This fall, the study was on Gideon. I'm going to be honest here and tell you that I had no idea what Gideon's story is, and I didn't know where to find it in the Bible at all. I wasn't really planning on doing the study since I was suppose to have my hands full, but once everything settled down with Kaitlyn not being here I realized that Bible study is probably the absolute best thing I could do with my time.
Quick synopsis: Gideon is found in the book of Judges in the Old Testament, and he was a leader of the tribe of Isreal against the Midianites. The portion of the story that we were focusing on this week was the fact that Gideon had 32,000 men with him and God asked him to whittle it down to 300 through various elimination factors before Gideon was allowed to go into battle. Our Bible study is centered around a video (this particular study is by Priscilla Shriver) and then group discussion around our tables. Our group is quite a talkative bunch, and I love it because nobody is in the same season of life. I'm probably the youngest in the group, but there are a few of our members who had never done a Bible study before the group was formed a year ago. Anyways, we started talking about how God took Gideon's army and shrank it down, and why He might chose to do that.
One of our members started talking about how people use the saying, "God will never give us more than we can handle." She says, "That's just malarkey", which made me start laughing. I totally agree with her. She said that God gives us more than we can handle all the time because He wants us to turn to Him for our help. He wants us to need Him and seek Him out when we are overwhelmed. I of course, just start crying because I realize that once again, God is using someone that I'm not even particularly close with to speak to me and remind me that He's in control.
